This is....Maddy Milan!

Recently I was intrduced to this amazingly talented new (to our dragopolis) queen named Maddy Milan.  I heard a lot of buzz about her from different people on the scene so I just had to know more!!!  Who is Maddy Milan?  Everytime I see her she is crazy and outspoken!  And by this interview you can see that is one of the best ways to discribe her!
Maddy now headlines a drag bunch at Fire & Ice located in Olde City once a month.  This month it is on March 23rd and Phillydragopolis will be on the scene to review the show and food!  I have heard it gets a big crowd and that the show is amazing!  I encourage you all to check it out this month!!
But enough of that shameless plug....Let's get to the good stuff!!

So THIS IS MADDY MILAN....

PD: How long have you been doing drag?
MM: I’ve always done some form of drag… but officially as a performer about 4 years.

PD: What made you decide to create the character of Maddy Milan? MM: She was one of many in a long string of characters that I had been doing. Each year a group of friends and I would go to Provincetown and bring some crazy monster of a “woman/drag act” to perform at Showgirls. Maddy Milan sort of created herself… she started out as a child pageant star who would do dance routines to old stairway to the stars episodes. The following year in Provincetown everyone kept calling me Maddy Milan even though I had brought a new performance piece so I just absorbed the name into my new character and it all just came together. Maddy was now an ex-child pageant star turned over the hill Vegas showgirl. Her hair like dolly Parton (in black of course) and eyes like Pricilla Presley. One part southern most parts indeterminable.

PD: What was your first drag show?
MM: My first shw ever was in Provincetown.  It was a big deal at the time.  I was nervous. The thing about starting in a town like that is everyone is so damn nice. By the time it was your turn to go on, even if you showed up and didn’t know a soul, you had become friends with everyone in the show and it just felt like yo: First show ever was in Provincetown. It was a big deal at the time. I was very nervous. The thing about u were performing for your friends. Showgirls is the most fun and I still look forward to doing it every year.

PD: What best describes Maddy's performances?
MM: Watching Maddy is like watching old people have sex…. It’s terrifying and scary…there is probably a foul smell but you just can’t turn away…dare I say awkward? But secretly you really love it… She can’t dance, she can’t sing…but god love her she breaks her back pretending to. Also you should be aware that even though she’s old, most likely drunk and should be hosting a bingo night somewhere… Don’t think she’s an old fart…she LOVES rock and roll. Heavy metal, old rock, rockabilly, everything from hardcore to country she loves it and will eventually throw her body around on stage to it at some point.

PD: What or who inspires Maddy?
MM: Maddy eventually will have every wig that dolly Parton ever wore but in black… Maddy loves a 60s stripper/showgirl look. Tacky is a very good word for her. The grosser the better. Gross. Low flat tits. Wide flat butt. Pricilla Presley has the most stunning face. Performance wise there are all types of people… Maddys main drag inspirations have been: Dolly Parton (60s Dolly), Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Divine, Dina Martina, Varla Jean Merman, Dame Edna and even though it’s not a person exactly every single piece of clothing that was ever made from 1963 up until 1999 excluding most of the 80s… unless we are talking about Dynasty in which case we can put that at the top just under lace cat suits.

PD: Well who does Maddy look up too?
MM: Anyone taller than her…. I think that only leaves Luna LaVey…. But generally anyone with talent, manors and a sense of humor that approaches life with positive energy.

PD: Now your first drag show in Philly was Josh Schonewolf’s Drag Dinner Party… What was that experience like?
MM:
It might have seemed strange to some people because I had lived here for three years but never performed here until his drag dinner. I was very nervous to perform in Philly. I was very very nervous. I was coming into a group that knew each other very well and was very active in the shows around town. No one knew who I was or had ever heard of me and I wasn’t sure they would understand Maddy. I was wearing a big black flip wig and short white lace dress with a big neon green bow. I was the only one not wearing black. I didn't feel like I fit in at all with this very well established group. What Maddy does with her shows was what I knew I wanted to see so I was very glad when I did my song (Wanda Jackson Fujiyama Mama) which was not a top 40 hit and very risky as a debut performance and people went nuts for it. I felt great after that. I thought "okay Philly does want this alternative category" it was all worth it.

PD: Describe in 5 words or less... who is Maddy?
MM: Lucky to still be a size 6

PD: There is a big trend in drag lately to create your own costumes and to sing live....What is Maddy stance on that?
MM: I’m glad! Thank god! It’s forcing people to be creative. I make every outfit that Maddy wears… and each one is made exactly for a particular show and song. Although Maddy has been getting booked more than ever lately so a few Iooks will have to be reused, which is SOOO gross but people will just have to stand back. And let’s just talk about the REAL current drag trend which is… how everyone is a drag queen now, Can you imagine? Straight people are going to be so much more confused walking down 13th street! First all the gays were all about being scruffy and clean and buff now its all about shaving off their eyebrows and stocking up on Walgreens pantyhose. If I was smart I would open up a CVS makeup counter. Make some real money! I do think it’s great that drag is trending in the world it shows people are becoming more creative and opening up their brains and stepping outside of what the world thinks they should be doing. As far as singing and sewing… its really setting a standard for what this strange activity is, which SHOULD be creating an ultimate illusion though whatever means you can! What better way than making a complete look from head to toe and then singing about it in front of 15 people at the local bar! If you can then do it! if you can’t still do it, but comfortably from within your home!

PD: What is one thing about Maddy that her fans don't know but would love too?
MM: Maddys boobs are made out of plastic grocery bags stuffed into nude spandex…. She has about 5 different sizes and sometimes has been known to wear two different sizes at once (it’s a very real fact that some women have two different sized boobs)

PD: More recently you starting hosting, along with some other amazing queens, a Drag Brunch at Fire and Ice… How did you get involved?
MM: Josh Schonewolf asked me to host and I was thrilled! I love the guy and would do anything he asked me to do… within reason and if I felt like it.

PD: How do you like the show and the Queens you work with?
MM: I love every girl in the show and couldn’t even imagine anyone who I'd rather spend 5 hours getting ready to hang out with than them… It really is a very talented group of girls and I couldn’t be luckier to work and know them. Tammy is an amazing friend, and such a support. Cleo is a dream to be around… she makes all of her outfits too! And I live for her voice. Lady Poison is enchanting to watch perform and I take lots of notes from her. There is no better way to spend ones morning than Sunday drag brunch with these queens. So all you lazy Bitches need to get your ASSES up out of bed walk over to the thing and get some stuff to eat with all these other people and the whomever’s and watch Philly’s top and upcoming legendary children perform for you. and if you can’t make it or afford it for some reason (it happens to everyone don’t feel bad) you could always form a crowd outside the front doors and wait for all of us to run down the street in full drag to feed lady Poisons meter…

PD: What's next for Maddy? Will we be seeing more of her in the future? MM: I doubt it… I think we will be seeing just as much as we have been… maybe more…maybe. There is an AMAZING group of drag queens in this town and they are working their pony tails off every night to entertain the pants off these hard assed folks of Philadelphia and beyond. I think I’ll leave the daily grind to them. Not to mention (but to also mention) Maddy takes forever to get ready including making a new outfit or three new outfits a show as well as hair to match… it’s really about scheduling. If there was more time in the world there would be more Maddy Milan performances.

PD: Departing words for your fans?
MM: I have fans!??

So there you have it!  A little glimpse inside the crazy mind of Maddy Milan!!!  She definitely is quite the....character!!!   Be on the look out for this queen!!
