Lastnight I was at the monthly hipster drag show QREAM. Located at the Barbary in No Libs. its not just a drag show but an adventure for us center city folk! Last month I was at the show and I had mixed feelings about it. The one thing that does make them stand out is that they love what they do and want to bring something different to the drag table! But it seems this rag tag bunch of drag queens and kings are really getting their show together! I definitely had a great time this time! I was speaking to Tammy Faymous ( one of the founding members) this morning about how the line up this time seemed to flow a lot better. They really work hard to make sure it is the best showit can be, for their fans. At the end of the show they made an announcement that exciting news was coming out in the Philadelphia Weekly about their show. So this morning I rolled out of bed, walked to the free newspaper boxes , grabbed a coffee, and came home to read all about it. It is the PW's "Better Than BEST: Hidden Treasures and Random Obsessions" issue. Which features ranedom categories like..."Most Desirable Gay Bar Employees Who's Also A Pornstar" (which I am proud to say my friend Sean Everett won!) & "Best Karaoke Star of the Gayborhood" (GO MISS BARBARA!) So here is where QREAM fits into the equation...
BEST DRAG SHOW / MOST TALENTED DRAG QUEEN
QREAM is Philly's newest, grittiest drag show and it's happening monthly at the Barbary. QREAM's creator, drag king Oscar Wildchilde (aka Emily Doofnoggle), hopes to expand Philly's drag scene past the Gayborhood. Each night, Tammy Faymous aka Alex Kacala belts out (no lip-synching here) tunes like Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" and Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black", in at this hybrid dance party/drag show. "There are water guns filled with vodka, beer cans being sprayed and shirtless straight boys on the dance floor grinding up against a queen who just sang the Yeah Yeah Yeahs", says Miss Faymous. Sounds like a party.
